WHAT IS LASER THERAPY?

Using handheld laser diodes and LED clusters, PBM (Photobiomodulation) Therapy is the application of red and near-infrared light to tissue where there is degeneration or injury, to improve, repair, and reduce inflammation and pain. This is achieved via PBM Therapy’s ability to reduce oxidative stress which is accepted as the underlying trigger for most diseases and degenerative conditions. Oxidative stress is also a component in the inflammatory phase of acute and chronic injuries.

Intended uses of PBM Therapy include:

  • Restoration of motion to joints

  • Improved muscle performance

  • Decreased post exercise soreness

  • Adjunct to obesity as part of a diet and exercise program

The clinically-supported benefits of red and near-infrared light are:

  • Less pain and inflammation

  • Faster rate of recovery after injury

  • Earlier return to physical health

  • Reduced fat and cardiometabolic risk factors

  • Less soreness after exercise, faster recovery from exercise

  • Anecdotal reports include: better sleep, less stress and less depression

OUR LASERS
We have two industry leading devices; often used simultaneously.
LIGHTFORCE LXi: Class IV deep tissue laser for rapid treatments up to 5cm deep. Excellent for anything from deep joints, muscle, ligament, some organs, spine, nerve and brain.

THOR LX2: Class 3b for effective treatments at up to 3cm deep. Excellent for superficial wounds, superficial joints, muscle, ligament, some organs, spine, nerve and brain.

**multiple area treatments may combine both when available.
**class of laser will be determined by your therapist.

1. How does PBM Therapy work?
Light is absorbed at the cellular level, targeting the cause of inflammation by reducing oxidative stress. Light can stimulate or inhibit cellular function according to its intensity and the time applied.

Lasers and LED's produce intense beams of light at specific wavelengths. When the right wavelength at the right intensity is used at the correct anatomical location for the right amount of time you can stimulate repair, resolve inflammation and reduce pain. Separate from clusters, high intensity single point lasers can release trigger points and treat acupuncture points instead of needles.

A little science… One of the primary mechanisms is the effect of light on cytochrome c oxidase and consequently the unbinding of nitric oxide and release of ATP leading to improved cellular function. For anti-inflammatory effects studies have found a measurable reduction in PGE2, TNF Alpha and IL-6 in the synovia surrounding damaged tendons and for analgesia high intensity lasers over nerve supply can inhibit fast axonal flow.

2. How does it compare with other therapies?
PBM Therapy works at the cellular level, stimulating repair and normalizing cell function. Many therapies only address symptoms without addressing the source. That said, chronic degenerative changes often cannot be "healed," instead they must be managed. PBM Therapy is a safe, effective, drug-free therapy that has been shown to reduce pain and inflammation at its source.

3. How can PBM Therapy be used?
This non-invasive therapy has been show to be highly effective for acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions such as as sports injuries, fibromyalgia, chronic fatigue, neuropathy, arthritis pain, gout, and more. The intended uses of PMB Therapy include:

  • redevelop muscles

  • restore motion to joints

  • an adjunct treatment for obesity

4. I’ve never heard of this before – it is real?
There are currently over 400 clinical trials (RCT), and 4000 laboratory studies on PBM Therapy, with 30 new research papers a month being reported on Pub Med. The NovoTHOR was developed by James Carroll, who is a recognized authority on Low Level Light Therapy (LLLT) mechanisms of action, dose, and the measurement and reporting of parameters. He collaborates with many universities and hospital research centers on treatment protocol design and reporting of treatment parameters, including Harvard Medical School and MIT.

5. How is it applied?
PBM Therapy can be delivered to the entire body using the state-of-the-art NovoTHOR Whole Body Light Pod. In as little as 8-12 minutes, users experience a decrease in pain and relaxation of muscle spasms.

6. What will I feel?
Unlike high intensity lasers, PBM Therapy does not heat tissue. It does however increase circulation so a warming sensation is often experienced. The following outcomes have been reported by clients. These outcomes may not apply to every person, and are not intended to guarantee, promise, represent and/or assure that anyone will achieve the same or similar results:

  • "temporary euphoric feeling"

  • "increased energy levels

  • "improved sleep patterns

  • "improved mood

  • "improved skin clarity and tone

  • "improved bowel function

  • "decreased swelling of extremities

  • "increased energy

  • "increased mental clarity

  • "increased general sense of well-being

Occasionally some clients may experience mild fatigue, discomfort, or aches after a session. These responses should reduce after 24-48 hours; if they persist notify your Recovery Specialist.

7. How many sessions are usually needed?
Every person’s physiological conditions are unique, therefore each person’s reaction to PBM Therapy will be unique, as well. However, there are some general rules of thumb that apply to PBM Therapy. Acute injuries and inflammation from muscle strains and sprains, cuts, bruises, burns, etc., typically show very rapid improvement and can resolve in 2-4 sessions. Long-term, chronic conditions can take as many as 12 sessions to get significant benefits, then weekly or bi-weekly sessions may be necessary to maintain benefits.

8. What is the session process like?
Goggles are provided to reduce brightness during your session. You can disrobe to your level of comfort, however light cannot penetrate clothing so it is optimal for no clothing to be worn. You will lie on the bed face up for the duration of the session. The first NovoTHOR session should last only 5 minutes to identify if there are any photosensitive responses. The standard suggested session time is 12 minutes; when completed the unit will turn off automatically.

9. Is there anything else I should know?
Cancer: If you have active cancer diagnosis, seek advice from your oncologist before engaging in a NovoTHOR session. Pregnancy: This product has not been tested for safety on pregnant women. While the light is safer than the rays from UV tanning beds or sunshine, the common advice for pregnant women is that Increased temperature later in pregnancy has a risk of starting premature labor.
Diabetes: It is conceivable that this session may reduce medication requirements. If you have diabetes, monitor your blood sugars closely initially as insulin requirements may reduce.
Light Sensitivity: If you take medications or have conditions that may be affected by light, notify your healthcare professional before beginning your NovoTHOR session.
Pins/Plates/Metal Implants/Pacemakers: There is no evidence of adverse effects for clients with these devices.

10. Can I use insurance as a form of payment?
No, we do not accept insurance policies. You can always ask your insurance provider if they can reimburse you, but we do not accept insurance for payment. Many of our clients use their health savings account cards just like a credit card.
